The process of manufacturing precipitated silica can be explained in four steps:
Precipitation: In an agitated vessel, sodium silicate solution and mineral acid are reacted to produce a slurry of amorphous silica particles. The physical properties of precipitated silica can be controlled during this step in the manufacturing process. These properties include porosity, particle size, composition, concentration, reaction time, and agitation speed.
Washing: The obtained precipitated silica slurry is then concentrated to form a filter cake. This filter cake is washed to eliminate the salt byproduct produced during precipitation.
Drying: The silica filter cake is dried to achieve the desired moisture content.
Finishing and packaging: Finishing is done on the dried silica to achieve the desired final form. This can include milling, agglomeration, and classification to the required particle size distribution. The final finished product is packaged in small bags, big bags, or bulk trucks.
